10 on 10 – April [Heber Springs Photographer, Little Rock Photographer]

(10 on 10 …. Ten photos taken throughout one day or event, documenting that day or event, and posted on the 10th of each month. Photographers from around the world who met up through The Bloom Forum are participating.)

This month, I planned ahead, woo-hoo!, and used our spring break trip to Hot Springs, AR for my 10 on 10 post. And first, a little history thanks to Wikipedia and the city’s website…Hot Springs was named for the 143°F waters that flow from 47 springs throughout the area. It’s also the only American city located within a national park. The downtown includes historic bathhouses and hot springs of water flowing from the mountain…almost too hot to touch. In its heyday, the town was a popular destination for the rich and famous like Babe Ruth and Al Capone.

And enough with the history! The boys and I, hubby included, headed to Hot Springs in March mainly for one activity…to mine for crystals. According to yet another website, Arkansas and Brazil have the best quality quartz crystal in the world. Who knew! The crystal deposits are located through the Ouachita Mountains around Hot Springs. With our $2 shovels, jeans and boots we spent most of the day tromping through the mud in search of the super transparent crystals that look like glass. I was surprised to finally pull out one to see it was shaped just like, well, a crystal! They were beautiful, “crystal clear,” with very defined planes and angles. The foggy ones were scattered everywhere. The super clear ones required some work. But how exciting it was when we dug up the sizable ones.

So here’s our Spring Break 10 on 10, photographed over two days, enjoying the sites of Arkansas which is fittingly called The Natural State. Here goes!

My oldest peeking out the hotel window in the morning

Breakfast at The Pancake Shop downtown

The boys on a hike in one of the downtown parks surrounding the hot springs…the steam in the photo is from the springs

At the muddy mines to start digging for crystals

One of our crystal “treasures”…once it’s cleaned, you can see straight through it!

A little “flying” back at the hotel (grainy and blurry but they had fun!)

A trip to the Garvan Woodland Gardens and the adventure park for kids with caves and waterfalls…and a tree full of caterpillars!

Supper in downtown Hot Springs. Gotta love the iphone to keep the boys settled and wine to settle me!

And a little bedtime “Push-up Pop” snack
